Salt River Cottage

Welcome to your tidal river retreat!

Above the tides...

This eco-friendly, Northern White Cedar log home overlooks the confluence of two of Maine's beautiful tidal rivers. Home to bald eagles, osprey, moose and harbor seals, and surrounded by a secluded forest amidst wild blueberry bushes and raspberry and blackberry brambles, Salt River Cottage is your perfect vacation getaway. From its perch on a beautiful wooded bluff, Salt River Cottage offers stunning views of the water from every common room. The Cottage provides clean, traditional accommodations for up to 6 guests (with expansion to 9 using the sofa bed and camp cot).

The Rivers' Confluence is a perfect space for wildlife viewing...

At night, enjoy a sky with countless stars, in the morning a world greeted first by songbirds and the calls of bald eagles (or perhaps the Scottish Highland cattle across the river!). At low tide, look for tracks of deer and moose, flip rocks to discover tiny intertidal creatures, or comb the shore for sea glass. At high tide, walk the shoreline path, watching for the occasional bobbing head of a curious harbor seal and the spectacular plunges of hungry osprey (called "fish eagles" by the locals) diving for fish.

This 2,000 square-foot cottage offers all the comforts of home...

This home has three bedrooms, one in the loft and two on the lower level, each with a queen bed. The lower level bedrooms have water views; the loft has a skylight view of the stars and a separate space for reading, yoga or meditation. There are two small, but full, bathrooms each with sink, shower and tub: one on the main floor, one the lower level. The main entrance to this net-metered solar house is a short flight of steps from a front patio. A foyer for your shoes and coats opens to the remodeled kitchen featuring microwave, stove, oven, dishwasher, farm sink, butcher block counters, half-wall with bar stools that look out on the water, and many accessories including a Nutribullet, toaster, lobster pot, french press coffee maker, tea kettle and a full set of cookware, dinnerware, and utensils.

In front of the half-wall is a breakfast nook with seating for three and some of the best views from the house. You'll dine at the six-top rustic timber dining table (borrow the deck tables to expand) over radiant floor heating (when needed) with more windows overlooking those same amazing views. On the rare days when it's needed, there is a wall-mounted unit for cooling and additional heating. On the far end of this open concept vaulted ceiling dining room is a wood stove, windows to view the sunset, and relaxing seating for two. Or you can choose to nestle into the reading nook nearby. Enjoy the full length deck for unimpeded photography and sound of the property's abundant wildlife, with binoculars and spotting scope provided (for house use only).

The Cottage is WiFi-enabled, so you can connect for work or pleasure. You can also connect to the WiFi speakers for stereo sound and Salt River Cottage's Spotify playlists. For more traditional entertainment, retreat to the adjacent family room with sofa (which converts to a sofa bed) and lounge chair, for board games, another water view, or to log in to your streaming service to watch your favorite shows on the 32" flatscreen TV. In addition to the bedrooms on the lower level, you'll find a laundry room with washer/dryer, and our common room in which we're proud to share a one-of-a-kind photographic exhibition of Machias Bay petroglyphs, rock art made by the Wabanaki people between 400 and 3,000 years ago. You can exit this room through an exterior door, which leads to the Cottage's shoreline path, a short walk (steep in places, so please tread carefully) down to the tidal river waterfront.
